“Steve was a big part of the meet. I will never forget the smiling face as he lead each race in the 4-wheeler, ” says team captian Kelsie Hutsell.

Thursday, September 10th, 2009 was a special day for the Cross Country team. The Willow Springs Cross Country Invitational has formally been renamed The Steve Waggoner Invitational.

Steve Waggoner is Coach Chris Waggoner’s dad who recently passed away with a heart attack. Steve always helped out at all of the Willow Springs home meets. Steve marked the course, lead the way on the 4-wheeler, and was always there early helping Coach Waggoner set up.

“He was just a great Dad. He was always concerned in everything that Beckey and I did. He was also always involved,” said Chris Waggoner. This was an emotional time for all members of the Waggoner family and the Cross Country team.

“Its unbelieveable that anyone would name it after Steve, because he did it just because he wanted to. He just loved to help,” said wife, Alice Waggooner.

This meet was so monumentous that KY3 was there and aired a story of the meet.
