Royalty for All?
Homecoming is an exciting time for Willow Springs High. It brings a crazy and fun spirit week, an exciting parade, and the much anticipated Friday night game. Also, you can’t forget the lovely ladies! We’ve crowned girls “Homecoming Queen” for almost sixty years now, but the queen wasn’t always from the senior class.
The class of 2000-2001 had an exciting Homecoming. It was the 50th crowning to occur at Willow Springs High School, and that year the student council decided that they should have a senior Homecoming Queen as opposed to allowing any class the chance to win. This was due to the fact that the freshmen candidates typically won because of their larger class sizes, and many felt that it should be a senior year privilege to be crowned. However, not wanting to leave anyone out, the council elected to have a ‘princess’ from each grade that would be given the honor to walk but not be crowned, and then to add two senior additional candidates to have the chance to be queen.
The first three senior candidates were Mindi Collins, Katie James, and Katie Phares. The princesses were freshman Ashley Collins, sophomore Brandi Collins, and junior Becky Reiners. Katie Phares was announced the Homecoming Queen of 00-01.
Our 59th homecoming queen was Hollie Cox. She walked with seniors Crystal Blagg and Eryn Alcorn. The princesses were freshman Whitney Clinton, sophomore Yohan Lin, and junior Rachel Toll.
“We had three great candidates this year; it was a very close race,” Mr. Knapp, student council advisor said. “Since all of the girls got a lot of votes, I think they all represented the student body well.”
