Bears Whip the Wildcats
On October 23rd, the Bears faced off in a very important district game against the Cuba Wildcats at home field. The Bears wanted to get a win here to assure a spot in the playoffs.
The Wildcats won the toss and would receive first. The Bears’ defense held the Wildcats to very few yards on the first drive and forced a punt. This was the first of many great plays as the Bears’ defense really socked it to them. The Bears’ offense was able to score on the first drive with a long push down to the 16 yard line where Cole Johnson would complete a pass to Clint Harper into the end zone for the score. With a missed extra point field goal, the Bears were only able to put up six on this drive. The Wildcats would not have an answer for this touchdown until the second quarter.
At the beginning of the second quarter, the Wildcats were able to put some points on the board, when R. Burke pushed it in from two yards. The Wildcats were up by two with a successful two point conversion, but this lead would be short-lived. The Bears would answer with two long touchdown passes from Johnson to Harper and a 31 yard touchdown run by Brandon Pitts. With successful two point conversions on all three touchdowns the Bears made the score 30 to 8 at the end of the first half.
In the second half, the Bears still poured it on with another complete pass from Johnson to Harper from 15 yards. The Bears would get the ball again with another amazing stop by the Bears’ defense. The Bears final score would come from a two yard run by Pitts. This made the score Bears-44, Wildcats-8 at the end of the third quarter.
In the final minutes of the fourth quarter, the Wildcats were finally able to score again on the Bears junior varsity. With a successful two point conversion the final score was Bears-44, Wildcats-16.
“Playoffs” yelled the Bears at the end of the game, which is where they will be going as a result of this big win against Cuba. The Bears have not made it to the playoffs since 2003.
