In our present economy, many families face a seemingly unending financial burden. Families are working extra jobs just to make ends meet and hoping there will be enough money after bills are paid to put food on the table. Members of the West Plains community recognized this burden and took steps to reducing the load on fellow residents.

A local man heard about the national program “Plant a Row” and thought to start something similar in the West Plains area. The “Community Garden Committee” was formed through his efforts.

The primary goal of the Community Garden is to provide a place for families to grow fresh produce to either be directly consumed or donated to local food banks. The garden is holding the expectation to educate, encourage, and teach individuals to grow their own produce. This also encourages healthy eating and reduces the financial burdens for families.

Orientation for the Community Garden is scheduled to take place February 13th at the health department. Unable to attend? No worries. You do not have to be at the orientation to sign up for and have plots at the garden. There will also be memorial bricks available to individuals, with a donation of $50, that will be engraved and placed around the garden at various scenic areas. Workshops will be offered for gardeners each month that will be opened to the public as well as those who have plots at the garden.

To reduce the financial burden your family may be facing or to just get involved in a community project, the Community Garden is the perfect opportunity. Not only will the fresh produce benefit your family, but you will learn helpful gardening tips for the future.
