Willow Bears vs. Salem Tigers
On Friday February 5th, the Bears traveled the snow covered road to Salem to take on the Salem Tigers. The game was moved to 6:00 because of the weather conditions, and only the varsity Bears would be playing. This game was a very important for the Bears for not only was it a conference game, but the Bears have not beaten Salem at their gym since 1992.
The Bears came out strong and had some good offensive plays to put them up by six after one quarter of play. The Bears continued to battle and at the half, the score was Bears-48, Tigers-40.
The Bears continued to sustain the lead in the second half with some great shooting being contributed by all players. The Bears played good all around basketball to shut out the game with a final score of Bears-78, Tigers-64.
The Bears did a phenomenal job scoring with four players in double figures. Among the four was Allen Braiser who had a great night getting a double-double with 11 points and rebounds. Also their free throw percentage was 86%, which is an improvement from past games. The top scorer for the Bears was Steven Mallow with 25 points. The top scorer for the Tigers was Phillip Moser also with 25 points.
The win was very important to the Bears because the Bears needed the win to keep their untarnished 3-0 record in the conference. Also, it was important to break that losing steak in Salem that has lasted since 1992.
“Overall we are playing better. However, we still have stretches when we struggle. We are still looking for that consistency,” commented Coach Mallow.
