Art Department Promotes Beauty in Our School and Community
Several projects are in the works to promote art and beauty in the Willow Springs schools and community. Refurbishing school signs, helping with downtown artwork projects, and hosting an art contest for many area high schools are some of the ways the Willow Springs High School Art Department, headed by Mr. Ron McGarry, is doing its part to make a positive difference. First, sophomore art student Jarica Maggard is repainting the lettering and bear on the marble block, originally donated by the Class of 1977, in front of the high school.
- Jarica stands beside the stone sign she is in the process of brightening. Two high school students waiting for the first bell are in the background. Many students have passed through the doors of Willow Springs High School since this sign was donated by the Class of 1977.
Second, the halls of the high school now feature the framed artwork of current and former art students. The Educator also features a student artist of the week based on recommendations from the art department in its online school paper.
Third, a large outdoor painting by local artist Michael McClure has been commissioned to be painted on the high school, illustrating a Missouri black bear in keeping with the theme of the downtown murals: “Wildflowers of the Ozarks”. The art department is trying to help raise funds to support that project.
Finally, in April, Willow Springs High School will host the 44th Annual Alpha Rho Tau multi-school exhibit. Senior Brittany VanHorn is organizing this event as her senior project. The art department under the direction of Marie Booth began this show. It continues to be a valued tradition at Willow Springs High School where many talented students present their artwork.
