Fourth Graders Create Their Own Landforms
by Courtney Stuart, Elementary Computer Teacher
Mrs. Barry’s fourth graders decided to create their own landforms. Not with bulldozers or shovels, they used graham crackers and colored icing. The assignment was to create two different landforms using brown, green and blue icing. The students had to show Mrs. Barry their landform and explain which landform they had created. They were allowed to devour their landform once they were approved.
Mrs. Barry chose this type of hands-on activity for her students because she wanted to do a project that would grab their attention and help them remember what landforms look like. A week later her students were successfully able to identify different landforms and describe what they look like.
Several of Mrs. Barry’s students were asked what they thought about the assignment.
Cody said, “I really enjoyed eating it.”
Jordan said, “I liked the activity.”
When asked how their landform tasted, Zac said, “My landform tasted great!”
“I loved it, especially when I got to eat the coastline,” replied Alex S.
Tiarra said, “It was a lot of fun!”
Alexa said, “It tasted great!”
All of the students enjoyed this study of landforms. Who could resist graham crackers and icing as learning tools?
