Drunk Driving Takes Lives Even on the Water
by Whitney Dampier
Britteny Sage Lindt was born to Tim and Kari Lindt in 1991 in Phoenix, AZ. Britteny was wise beyond her years. She loved and respected everyone. Even though the family moved, with work, on a regular basis, Britteny’s beautiful blue eyes, and loving smile, along with her wit and generous personality made her many new friends in every town.
She was so full of confidence. Even at age seven, she was a Junior Denver Broncos cheerleader, performing in front of 75,000 fans. She was always her own person and did not concern herself with peer pressure and what others thought. She was a true leader.
In 2001 the family moved to Texas. Britteny flourished in the community of Highland Village. She played volleyball for several years and most recently made the Marcus High School Cheerleading squad. She had such a bright future that was taken away in seconds.
Friday night, August 18, 2006, Britteny Lindt’s life was taken by an alleged drunk driver of a boat on Lake Lewis-ville in Texas. Britteny was tubing on the Lake with some friends when Britteny was ran over by a man that chose to drink and then drive his boat.
No one ever realized how many lives she touched, until it was too late. Over 1,000 people were there for her funeral service. To be 15 years old and touch that many lives is an accomplishment most people never achieve in a lifetime. She was such a special person. In her words, “I am not any better than anyone else. Everyone is special.” This is the code by which Britteny lived.
The Lindt family is trying to make changes in the boating laws and raise awareness to the huge national problem that exists with drunk driving of all motorized vehicles.
They have set up a non-profit corporation to raise money in Britteny’s name to raise awareness and change the laws of drinking and boating, as well as improve the safety of boating. They believe it was not Britteny’s time to go and want to make a difference so this tragedy does not happen to more young lives and devastate more families.
