Bears Varsity Defeats Southwest 56-44

Thursday, the Willow Springs Bears played Southwest Washburn in the semi-finals of the Strafford Tournament. The Bears won with a final score of 56-44.Southwest jumped out to an early 10-2 lead against the Bears. Willow responded and had the game tied by half time. The Bears’ defense and rebounding improved as the game continued. The Bears were able to pull away in the third quarter. During that period they outscored Southwest 15-5. Willow made 20 of 24 free throw attempts and used a balanced scoring attack.
“I thought defensive rebounding was a key. We rebounded the ball much better in the second half. Our improving defense and rebounding allowed us to win this game,” said Coach Mallow.
Scoring for WS: Cole Johnson 9, Taylor James 8, Clint Harper 8, Tyler Fredrick 7, Blayne Collins 6, Jared Hummel 6, Allen Brasier 5, Jon Martin 5, and Zach Cunningham 2.
Senior Allen Brasier held Skylar Kroll to 2 points. Kroll entered the game averaging 24 points per game. The Bears also drew three charges during the contest. ”I like the way we responded to adversity tonight. Southwest got up on us early and we fought back,” said Coach Mallow.
The JV Bears advanced to championship play by defeating Ash Grove 60-48.
