Willow Varsity Continues Undefeated
by Alissa Chapman
The Willow Springs Bears continue with their undefeated record as the season’s first home game was a success against the Licking Wildcats. The Bears defeated the Wildcats 78-67 on Tuesday, December 7.

In the first quarter, the Bears trailed the Wildcats 27-15. Licking only missed one shot the entire first quarter, hurting the Bears momentum. During the second quarter, Willow kept their heads up and fought their way back into the game. “We started playing a more intense defense during the second quarter, which changed the game entirely,” commented Senior Blayne Collins. The Bears ended the half by narrowing the gap to two points, outscoring the Wildcats 17-10 in the second quarter.
The Bears worked to get the lead back throughout the second half, scoring 46 points in 16 minutes. “I admire the way we fought back tonight,” said Coach Mike Mallow. “The guys really showed a lot of guts. I think we were down 17 points at one time. You have to take your hat off to Licking- They played an outstanding first quarter.”
Willow continues its winning streak, though with close games. “We need to close games a little better, it got a little crazy,” said Coach Mallow. “Four and zero is a great start.”
Individual scoring: Taylor James 17, Clint Harper 15, Jared Hummel 14, Tyler Fredrick 13, Allen Brasier 11, Blayne Collins 4, Zach Cunningham 2, Jon Martin 2.
Freshman Bears also caught a victory 40-28 against Licking. The JV Bears fell short 49-53.
The Bears will face the Marshfield Blue Jays next Tuesday, December 14 at Marshfield. Come support your Willow Bears as they hope to add another victory to their perfect record.
