Willow Bears Make History
by Alissa Chapman
It was a packed house Friday night at Cabool’s gymnasium. History was made on February 18, as it was the first time in 27 years the Willow Springs boys basketball team defeated all SCA teams. Willow conquered the Cabool Bulldogs 74-67 and took home the SCA Conference Title.
The Bears started the game with tons of energy by hitting 6 three-pointers during the first quarter. Cabool bounced back and dominated the second quarter, ending the first half 39-32. Willow fought back and ended the third quarter with a two point advantage. In the fourth quarter, the Bears widened the gap and ended the game 74-67.
Individual Scoring: Clint Harper 23, Taylor James 22, Blayne Collins 9, Jared Hummel 9, Allen Brasier 9, Cole Johnson 3, Tyler Fredrick 1
Willow went 7-0 in conference play, the first time since 1984. This is the 19th SCA Conference Championship for the Willow Springs Bears Basketball Program. “I’m sure the accomplishments of this group will sink in over time. I’m proud of everything they have accomplished,” said Coach Mike Mallow.
The Willow Springs Bears are now 20-4 and received the first seed in districts. Their first district game will be held at Cabool against the winner of the Alton/Houston game on February 28 at 6 p.m. Congratulations, Bears, and good luck in districts!
